Fritz Lang's first great film was this Faustian fantasy set in the middle ages. When a young woman's lover is taken by Death, she finds a way to enter his secret garden. Death gives her a challenge: if she can best him by saving any one of three lives that are in danger, she will be reunited with her lover. This sets up fantastic adventures in Arabia, Italy, and China where peril and treachery are around every corner. A reivival of Mont Alto's 2000 score for the film.
