Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

This is the cue sheet for our score to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as commissioned by Donald Krim and released by Kino Video. The score was compiled by Rodney Sauer, assisted by Susan M. Hall. All of the pieces are in the public domain, but the compilation, any modifications, and the recorded performances are copyright Mont Alto, ©2001.

We hope that making cue sheets for our silent film scores makes it easy for viewers to discover the names and composers of pieces that catch their attention, or to find pieces by photoplay music composers in whom they are interested.

Our goal on this score was to make a dark and melodramatic score that would serve to match the curious and dark visual style of the film. At places where the acting is "over the top," we attempted to make the music go right along with it, and perhaps make it seem less out of place. The exotic presence of Nita Naldi required themes that were unusual and haunting, to explain her effect on Dr. Jekyll; and that could be repeated whenever she appeared -- especially to underscore her last appearance, where she is nigh on unrecognizable due to her drug-induced destruction. Gabriel Marie, a French composer and conductor who worked in Paris, contributed the melodramatic opening theme.

The digital timings given here are from our pre-release video and may not match the final release.
